What's Happening This Week
1/6 - 1/10
1/5 - Happy 2015!! To begin our New Year, we will begin to set up our study on World War I by looking at something called imperialism. We will first define it, and then throughout the week, look at specific examples of U.S. imperialism in the late 1800s and early 1900s using the text, maps, and videos! Our first step however, is to take a pre-test to see what we know about what we will study this week.
1/6 - Today we will look at how the United States obtained Alaska and Hawaii. We will first learn what life was like in each state before we got there, and then we will learn about how the United States obtained each state. Finally, we will decide whether or not it was right or wrong to "take over" each land.
1/7 - Today we will look at the U.S. and their role in Latin America, especially involving the Panama Canal. The first thing we will do is to locate certain areas on the map, such as Panama. From there, we will learn how canals work and specifically how the Panama Canal was built and determine its affects on not only the U.S., but the entire world.
1/8 - Today we will focus on China. Again, we will begin by looking at a map and locating key parts of China. From there, we will look at a really brief history of the immense culture of China. Finally, we will look at the U.S. involvement in China, most especially the Boxer Rebellion.
1/9 - Today we will wrap up our short look at U.S. imperialism by creating a timeline and other artifacts at our tables!
